Fine at a Distance
Originally released July 11, 2020.
Fine at a Distance is a collection of instrumentals, demos, and experiments. These tracks were crafted during the few months spent in isolation during quarantine and are in various stages of completion. Some are instrumental versions of beats provided to other vocalists or rappers; others represent one-off experiments of different styles. The title of the album refers to both the level of polish - or lack thereof - for these tracks, but also to the mindset of the artist and those around him; everything appears fine at a distance, but it’s hard to tell for certain when you’re cut off from the world.
Head in the Clouds
Originally released March 16, 2020.
Following the Triptych series of EPs, Bug created one additional electronic and sampling-centric EP, a self-titled release under the moniker Muad’lib, before setting down the sampler with the intention of returning to rock-oriented roots for LP3.
Instead, LP3 became Head in the Clouds, a refinement of the ideas and sounds explored on the previous EPs. The music floats between lilting ambient space and the jarring crackles of glitches and fuzz, between quiet, contemplative meditation and an unbearable, transcendent beauty.
Head in the Clouds is the crowning achievement in Bug’s electronic explorations to date.
Read more about Head in the Clouds in this interview with Bug for Orange Blush Zine.
La journée sera rude
Originally released March 1, 2019.
Almost immediately after the release of the first album, Bug was invited to participate in the 2019 RPM Challenge*. This album is the result.
Though more consistent and rooted than the previous release, La journée sera rude is an ambling and tender journey, its defining characteristics borne of the factors that led to its very existence.
It is a soft meditation, and serves as a snapshot of the Bug in its natural habitat; it is a moment in time, captured intimate and raw.
*The RPM Challenge is a creative challenge offered yearly to musicians, similar to other time-based challenges such as NaNoWriMo. RPM invites musicians to create a whole album of music, 10 songs or 35 minutes, in the month of February. It is not a contest, so there is no winner.”
Note: This release meets the RPM definition of “album” by including ten songs, though the tenth track is intended as a bonus track.
Soundtrack, Vol. I
Originally released February 2, 2019.
The inaugural release by Bug, Soundtrack, Vol. I* remains the most experimental, and spans the most sonic territory of any Bug album thus far.
Featuring seven new songs and one adaptation**, Soundtrack, Vol. I combines elements of ambient, shoegaze, post-punk, electronica, and more to create an aural medley representative of one of Bug’s defining characteristics: exploration.
*Subtitled as Songs that Spilled Forth from November to January in some markets.
**An earlier version of “Fishbowl” had previously been released by another Bug moniker, Snuff Stuff, with the track titled as “Pretty/Dirty.”
